The local currency is the Mozambican Metical (MZN). Especially in Maputo, many establishments accept credit cards. Nevertheless, it is advisable to always have some money with you. It is common to tip usually 10% of the bill.
Languages & useful phrases
The official language is Portuguese, with many other national languages, such as Makhuwa, Tsonga and Sena. Some useful phrases in Portuguese are: “olá” = hello, “por favor” = please; “muito obrigado/a” = thank you; “desculpe” = sorry.

Relationships are extremely important in Mozambican culture. People like to establish rapport and trust before doing business, so it is essential to cultivate these ties.
What you shouldn’t do
Take your time. It’s important to be patient—Mozambicans handle business slowly, and the negotiation process may take longer than expected. Don’t try to rush decision-making, this type of attitude will not be appreciated.
What to wear
Appearance is important, so go for a formal style. Men should wear a suit and tie or classic trousers with a shirt and tie, and women should wear a suit or a dress with a blazer.
First impressions
Greet with a handshake. Asking about family and health, and showing that you’re genuinely interested is very important. Address people by their formal titles and surnames as a sign of respect.
