No wonder the name Accra comes from nkran, meaning “ants” in the Akan language. This is a vibrant and warm community. Book a flight to Accra and be prepared for many surprises.
An architectural cocktail
Once a modest port in the 14th Century, Accra saw the arrival of portuguese, dutch, french, danes and british influences. Today, the colonial-style architecture survives side by side with the skyscrapers and the shopping malls of the 20th Century.
Each street, a boiling point
Accra can’t live without its celebrations. The Homowo Festival includes many coloured rituals... including women hugging strangers on the streets! The Makola Market is an absolute must-see, intense and hot like the tropical weather. On Oxford Street, it’s time to taste the waykee (rice and beans). And in Jamestown, the modern Chole Wote Festival is gaining international reputation.
Culture and Business
Make sure you have your passport and boarding pass with you. Depending on your country of origin, take care of your visa or other necessary documentation ahead of time. Take all the necessary vaccinations and medication, if applicable.
The climate is tropical and humid, with temperatures between 25ºC and 30ºC.
Geography & politics
Ghana is a West African country located between Togo and Côte d'Ivoire. Its capital is the city of Accra. It has a multiparty government with a unicameral parliament and a president elected by universal vote. The president is also the head of state and the commander of the armed forces.
Tipping & paying
The local currency is the Cedi (GHS). Credit cards are accepted in large hotels and some shops, but you should always have some money with you. Although not mandatory, tips will be appreciated.
Languages & useful phrases
The official language is English, but there are 75 regional dialects. Some useful phrases in English are: “hello” = hello, “please” = please; “thank you” = thank you; “sorry” = sorry.
What you should do
Be prepared to talk about your family and personal life before doing business. It is important to establish a relationship of proximity and trust.
What you shouldn’t do
Don’t use your left hand to eat or offer a gift, as it is a sign of disrespect. Do not try to forcibly fill moments of silence. Silence is a normal way of responding to an uncomfortable situation.
What to wear
Choose a conservative look. A suit and tie is the most appropriate option, and the formal equivalent for women.
The most common form of greeting is the handshake. Hierarchy is important and you should use the corresponding formal titles when addressing someone. If you are invited to go to someone's home, you are not expected to bring a gift, but something small for the children will be seen as a nice gesture.
